Instructions for using the Juuli Finnish Research Publications Portal
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Juuli publications portal (www.juuli.fi) provides a tool for browsing information on publications by Finnish research organisations and for conducting searches. The portal is maintained by the National Library of Finland in collaboration with the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and CSC - IT Centre for Science.
The data in Juuli have been obtained in connection with the annual collection of information from the research information systems of Finnish research organisations. Joint publications by several organizations have been combined into one entry.
At the moment, the portal contains the publications of the Finnish universities from years 2011-2015, the publications of hospital districts from years 2011-2014, the publications of the universities of applied sciences from years 2012-2015 and the publications of a number of research institutes from years 2014-2015.
Statistical analyses on publication data can be obtained from the Vipunen reporting portal (www.vipunen.fi) that contains not only data on publications but also other information related to the operations of research universities and universities of applied sciences.
University-specific publication data can also be browsed in the publications register of each university:
- Aalto University
- Hanken School of Economics
- Lappeenranta University of Technology
- Tampere University of Technology
- University of Arts
- University of Helsinki
- University of Eastern Finland

BASIC SEARCH
Search results can be narrowed by selecting search terms from the menus on the right-hand side. The figures in parentheses after the options indicate the number of entries that contain the term in question. Several filters can be set at the same time and they can be removed by clicking the filter displayed.
The sidebar displays only those filtering options that are available for the selected search result.
For further information about search terms and syntax, see Search Tips.
INFORMATION ON SEARCH FILTERS
Institution
After searches conducted using the filter Institution, the sidebar will display the number of joint publications between the selected organisation and other Finnish organisations.
Author
The menu of authors lists only names that the organisations have reported as their authors. The publication data provide full information on the authors (the first 20 authors if there are more than 20).
The data system does not recognise the authors, which means that publications by authors with the same name are displayed together and the different spellings of an author's name are displayed as different authors.
Field of Education and Field of Science
The Fields of Education and Science are based on the classification used by the Ministry of Education and Culture in its collection of information. Different universities have defined their classifications using different criteria, with the result that one and the same publication may appear under different fields. Individual organisations may also have reported secondary fields for their publications, but the portal filters the publications only according to the primary field reported.
Publication Forum Class
The Publication Forum Class is based on the rating established by the Publication Forum Project (Federation of Finnish Learned Societies), according to which scientific publication channels (journals, publication series, book publishers) are ranked on the following three levels:
1=basic; 2=leading; 3=top
Publication channels indicated with a hyphen (-) include hitherto unranked channels as well as channels deemed as non-scientific.
Type of Publication
Publication types A1-A4 include peer-reviewed scientific articles and types B1-B3 non-peer reviewed scientific articles. Scholarly monographs are type C1 and edited scientific works are type C2. Publication types D1-D6 include professional publications and types E1-E3 popularised works aimed at the public at large. Doctoral dissertations are listed in types G4-G5.
At the moment, the portal includes publication types A-E and G4-G5 from the information collected by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which means that data on master's theses, patents and artistic works are lacking for the time being.
ADVANCED SEARCH
See Search Tips.
On the Advanced Search page, users can select several options from the menus (Language, Publication Forum Class, Type of Publication, Institution, Field of Education, Field of Science) simultaneously by pressing the Ctrl button while making the selection.
BROWSE THE CATALOGUE
The Browse the Catalogue page offers additional options for browsing. The options include opportunities to browse the publication data or the most popular publication channels (such as series, journals and publishers) of institutional sub-organisations (such as departments and disciplines) on the various fields of education and science or per sub-organisation.
As some organisations have not reported the data concerning their sub-organisations, the data on joint publications concerning these organisations include only the data for sub-organisations of other universities.
